It seems like a step back to learn a complicated 3d package only to render out a model that looks like it was drawn by hand, much like becoming a culinary expert to specialize in making grill cheeses...but even that has been done before!
I particularly enjoy 3d sketch renders because it gives a sophisticated yet loose look that comes with any sort of technical drawing. Thankfully, a model can be rendered in seconds, as opposed to what might take hours done by hand.
Another advantage of the sketch and toon rendering style in 3d is the ability to create technically accurate toon animations and scenes. Although 3d, the toon style can still give a 2d impression, although being technically accurate an consistent, saving the animators much work.
